Quality Control of Stool Examination for Parasite Ova

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of various detection methods and examiners on the results of stool examiantion for parasite ova and was performed in Chonnam National University Hospital from July to August, 1985. Random sampled stool specimens of 106 patients were prepared by various methods (4 slides by direct smear, 2 slides by cellophane thick smear, I slide by ZnSO4 flotation and 1 slide by MGL methods).
These slides were cbscrved by four examiners and the results were compared with those of routine stool examinations in Chonnam National University Hospital (2 cellophane thick smear slides examined by 1 examiner) during the same period.
The results were as follows:
1) Mean detection rate of parasite ova in study groups was increased to 43.9%
compared with 20.3% of control group.
2) Detection rate of parasite ova in study group was 29.8;0 in cellophane thick smear, 22.4¡Æo in MGL, 13.2% in direct smear and 12.5% in ZnSO4 flotation methods, observing one slide made by each method. When two slides prepared by cellophane thick smear method were examined, detection rate was increased to 35.9%.
3) Frequency and proportion of each parasite ova were variable according to examiner and methods.
Present study showed that two slide preparation by cellophane thick smear techn¡þique was more efficient than other methods in routine examination of parasite ova in hospital laboratory. And observer¢¥s technique and attitude to examination might be important factor in quality control of parasite laboratory.
